UŽGAVĖNĖS The PANCAKE DAY in Vilnius on 6 February at the Gedimino Avenue. Grand and loud traditional Lithuanian celebration to drive cold winter away with pancakes – užgavėnės that symbolize returning of the sun. Locals try to scare winter and dress up playful and frightening costumes of goats, devils, witches etc. For entertainment there shall be concerts, dancing, warm fair with many pancakes and much more.
There is a believe, that on this day you have to eat a lot (not less than 12 times), because it is the last day before the fast of Lent.
At the celebration people will witness how the winter that is personified as Lašininis a fat men and spring personified as Kanapinis a thin men are „fighting”. Spring Kanapinis always wins, while winter Lašininis is chased away until Easter.
In the evening at end of celebration people are yelling “winter, winter get out of my yard” and burn the symbol of winter Morė that is a creature made of straw.
